Posted by: Toxic Aug 4 2004, 03:07 PM

interesting read for sure. My first "rave" was late 91.

sob...I was the 97 man...and it is a bit of a weird position when you hear people mention 2000 era events as old. I did not ever think 1997 would seem a long time ago as it seemed so late to get into it at the time.

I think there are still good nights out there. You just have to be selective. I do think it's weird that alot of current Toronto 'ravers' never got to experience a mega party or an event at The Latvian House etc. I guess there is still 3 day but I can't really fathom getting into the scene now. It's so small and in some ways negative. If my first event was a 2001 or 2002 jam I doubt I would have gone again.

However, I think it's important to keep at it if you can. Going out once every couple of months won't kill ya and if you were there for the tunes then you can still get your fix. I just don't looking at going out anymore as a way to meet new people and have strange adventures. Which was a huge part of it so I can understand why people quit.

Partying in other cities is a nice way to keep it fresh.

Posted by: Variant Aug 5 2004, 04:59 PM

agreed.

i've had to change my expectations alot over the years. if i keep hoping for a 94 experience i'll always be let down. i'm pretty picky about what i go to but i still make it out when i can. luckily i go to events in all sorts of scenes so between them all i get out alot.

as far as jungle in the tdot goes.. i find oldschool themed parties like gridiron are pretty fun. everyone recognizes and goes off to the classic tunes.

and yeah.. if you want to rave it up like it was 10 years ago.. go over to the UK for an oldschool party.. its still massive over there and not filled with 16 year olds. i'll hopefully be hitting somethiing next year.

My first party was in 98. It was a pHryl party called sHiFt. That night changed my life.

Doc Scott and MC Justice were the headliners. Still have the flyer.

Yes, the scene has changed a lot since then. Not necessarily for the worse though.

Posted by: transcendz Aug 7 2004, 08:42 AM

Tyrone's first party was my last funny how things work.

I miss the good old days, but i'd rather keep those memories than 'write' over them with new ones.

Things aren't worse or better i think, just different.

Posted by: sector7g Aug 7 2004, 02:13 PM

very different. The last last party I spun at I got into an argument with some kid that said old school sucked. At that time I was playing "square off". He said this old school shit sucked. I then tried to aks him exactly what old school was to him. He told me I sucked and walked away. I guess he was half right. Yes trancendz, things are different.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner. My P's have one though, so next time I'm up in the P-town I'll scan it and post it. Might not be for a while though.

Peace.

Syrous - The Empire Strikes Back.

Could I have asked for a better first party/venue? I think not!

Funny thing is..I was dragged to this event kicking and screaming. Totally didn't want to go, as I'm a drummer, and was all about hardcore bands. Needless to say, by the time the party wrapped up...dancing with the sun up the following morning, I was dragged out kicking and screaming!

Thanks again Sigma! spin.gif

I wonder how many people have that same story? i think I was wearing a Suicidal Tendancies shirt at my first party(killer punk band for you young guns). I couldn't even tell you who the promoter was, but I was a changed man after that. I guess I can thank drugs for that. Without them, I would have never gone to a party in the first place. After drugs I'd definately thank the one like the SIGMA!

"I got a story to tell, now listen up real well. Pay attention this way, to what I gotta say...." GOLD!

Yeah I was all about hardcore (although I liked a lot of hip hop back then too). Skated every day, and was content with life. Then that night threw a wrench in all that! :P Glad to hear I wasn't the only one!!

Suicidal Tendancies was one of my favorite bands growing up in High School. Fuckin wicked. 'You cant Bring me Down' Waking the Dead' wickedwicked. I still listen to that shit once in awhile. I still like to listen to that sort of stuff once in awhile. You'd be surprised to see whats in my MP3 folder wink.gif

As for all the 'Thanks sigma!' lol dam guys, it was my pleasure. Im just happy I was a part of something like that.

Posted by: Dj Pascal Sep 23 2004, 10:01 AM

In a lot of ways, I miss the old school because it was all such a mystery to me then. I'm by no means a junglist and that's what was so special about hearing some of the stuff from back in the day when I would go to a Pleasure Force or Syrous party, or Delerium (though I only went to one). For the most part, I'm a techno/house head through and through. But having said that, I do like my jungle/d&b and whenever I smell Vicks or Street Meat on a chilled autumn/winter's night, I harken back to my days of waiting for the shuttle buses at Union Station & later Nathan Phillips Square. There's actually a funny (though I found it harrowing at the time) story about my last Delerium party.

Ah, sweet memories. Whoever comes up to me and tells me that the old school sucks, I have to chuckle to myself because some people just don't know how much fun they missed. tor.gif

Smooth,
You and I are both approaching the ten year anniversary of our first party (Empire Strikes Back); that party was everything I thought a rave would be: massive room, wicked tunes, nice light show. tune I remember most was "the lighter"; that track kept bouncing around in my head the entire way home, and at school the following week, and at X-static the next weekend when I was trying to find a mix tape that had it. Who would have thought the theme from "love story" could mix so well with d n'b? apparently, DJSS did.

To this day...I still get goosebumps when I hear that track. And WOW, ten years! Nostalgia's such an odd emotion... it's not happy, it's not sad....it's just...remembering. *sigh* Wish I could go back!!

Glad to hear I share a "first time party" with you!! woot woot!!

Posted by: charade Nov 19 2004, 04:51 AM

It's not even really a case of going back for me. If there was still good parties going on right now I would go. Clubs and afterhours are ok once in awhile but I miss real events. I try to go to London about once a year and just get nutty. A real shame that things in T.O just dried up.

Probably gonna happen very soon.

Since I lived in the middle of nowhere and my parents wouldn't fund my trips, I started late but kept up as best as I could. I had to save and pay friends for the tickets, hop on a bus for 2 1/2 hours then party then trip back to nowhere. Until 2001, when WEMF came to my home town where I could walk out my front door and rave for 3 days. uuglowstick.gif And that happend back to back. So even though I hardly Partied the music was always there. uuconcertlight.gif

Posted by: erbsmokah Apr 27 2005, 04:16 AM

Wowo '95 was a big year.. My first was Champion of Champions.. I had been listening to the music for a few years at this point... I too was a punk rock skater, but I fell in love with hardcore and breaks quickly.. Once Jungle really established itself I had to go.. Kenny Ken and MC reality made my night sick!

God, and cinespace.. what a venue.. I ended up partying there a few more times.. And later on at the docks.. oh gosh, 11 polson i mean... Hah, Look at what that venue became.

And theres still some good times left here, its just gone to the clubs... System Soundbar is good on saturdays.. And theres even some bigger promotions supposedly happening this summer.. blinkblink.gif wow.gif

Posted by: mrMarcus Jul 7 2005, 09:22 PM

First party attended was Utopia 2.

i was 16 at the time. the thing i regret the most was that i had a buddy whose older brother was raving since '92 at least, and he was always inviting us to reach the parties with him since '93 or so...but because of our age, (13 yrs old in '93), we were too young .

man we missed out on some sick parties.

Posted by: birdo Jul 20 2005, 09:01 PM

The first party I went to was Delirium lost in the jungle 4 at 11 Polson. That night got me hooked forever. Didn't miss one syrous party in 96. Took a 3 year break arround 97 after I saw Mickey Finn the first time he was here (thanks sigma, even though that was the end for you and syrous). Went to 3 day in 2001 and haven't stoped since. Good times and many memories in the almoast 10 years.

Hi! I started going to Focus, Surf Club, clubs like that, and warehouse parties in the around 86-87. My friend asked me to come down and check this new thing going on at 23 Hop/318 Richmond. I was going there on Friday nights for house but this was Saturday and he said is was "different". It was the summer of '91. It was Malik X, Dr. No, Sean L and Mark Oliver. I was hooked from then until now.

What's it been now....14 years of RAVE!

Posted by: Toxic Jul 26 2005, 02:04 AM

omg Surf Club at Bathurst and Steeles.

Beef you make me feel ooooooold!

Posted by: basketballjones Jul 26 2005, 02:20 AM

my first rave was destiny 2...

Posted by: green_souljah Mar 21 2007, 05:12 PM

Freakin 98 was mine.

Although I fully knew what to expect and had been into jungle since 92; just lived up north and had no way to get to raves. I knew more about the rave scene than most people there.

I remember getting that stack of flyers on exit and planning for the next one....it had started....

Then flipped my first pill at a Grooverider party in March of 99 and the next three years are a blurr;up until 2002 when the trance ended and became all Steve Lawlerish (see: boring) and the jungle wasn't doing it for me anymore. I still go out once every couple months to this day, but am nowhere near as into it as I once was. Which is probably
a good thing in some ways.

Best nights of my life though bar none. For the first time in my life I belonged to something I loved.

Posted by: KriStPUnCher Apr 30 2007, 01:38 PM

whomever started partying after 97 missed the boat

Posted by: tekkon Nov 29 2007, 03:45 AM

i have to agree.

my first party was Destiny 4 at the big bop. I voted 94 but I honesty cant remember if it was 93 or 94.

Its hard to say when the scene died off for me. I think between 16-20 I was in it for the experience, the music and all the pro's and none of the cons but once I hit 21 things outside my life of partying changed and so did my view of the scene. I dont know if I just matured out of the scene or got tired of it or maybe both. I wish I could get out and hit the floor once in awhile but my wife cant stand electronic music and friends are either married with kids or just not interested anymore ........................ that's life.

Posted by: SeanT Jan 26 2010, 07:13 PM

Started listening to jungle back in 1996... first time raver on November 15th, 1997 at the V-Recordings World Tour. Which was coincidentally the last party Sigma played out at according to the flyers section. smile.gif

They sure played the hell out of Warhead that night . I had an amazing experience. Raved a few times afterwards, had a near death experience and called it quits. grey_zer0_emoticon_-_snooze.gif
