Any one think that maybe a tutorial on how to move some of those TO rave tapes to mp3 is a good idea? Just a thought, hopefuly it will start a movement to preserve some of the best music from that time and place.

Well when I rip tapes I just use my walkman (the only cassette player in my house) and a double sided headphone jack which I plug right into my computer. I use soundforge to record it at a decent level and then encode the .wav file once it's done. I don't bother trying to "clean up" the tape because I find you just end up messing up the original tape sound. I'm in the process of ripping all my old tapes (the Sniper & Mystical live @ Joker's High being one of them) and would like to maybe start up some kind of trading for older Toronto tapes. There's been numerous tapes that I've lost over the years and although I can't remember how half the time I'd still like to get them back. So if anyone is interested in starting up some kind of xstatic tape online collection let me know. I'm sure if we all contribute something we could get a nice list going.

Encoding some of the tapes in my collection took some trial and error. Right now what i do is hook up my PC to my Tape Deck / Receiver and turn the Treble waaay down, depending on the quality of the tape. Just to get rid of all that hiss. Sometimes the Dolby Noise Reduction works nicely but it can also muffle things too much, depends on the audio. For the longest time i was encoding all of these mp3's through my Mac using a program called SoundJam. Worked really well. The High Quality MP'3 sometimes sound better than the tapes.

I started encoding my collection back in 99/2000 after realising these tapes wont last and alot of them are so damaged their beyond repair. Its all about digital now, gotta preserve the past with todays technology. I'll be setting up a service through PayPal for those who are interested in getting some of the files hosted here on CD. In High Quality of course. Look for that in February.

But if you would like to encode some audio for the site just send me a message and we can set it up.

I would like to share this cool freeware audio tool that I have found. It is called Audacity and can be downloaded at http://audacity.sourceforge.net. It has support for mp3 encoding but you have to download a third party dll file. It is quite simple and powerfull. I have used it now for a couple of weeks and have fallen in love with some of its simple filltering and amplifing effect. I have converted some of my tapes and look forward to swaping with you guys.

I use Soundforge to rip tapes and Cool to edit the wave files.

I tend to let software do all the work.. I don't touch controls on my tape deck when ripping. One thing thats really handy in Cool (i'm sure there's something similar in SF) are their Noise Reduction effects. Hiss reduction can do wonders for an old tape rip if you play around with it. Sometimes I'll boost the bass if I can find a good balance and doesn't ruin the overall quality. I always normalize as well.. it can help bring out the sound (again.. depends on original quality).

I should start going through my Xstatic tapes.. some tradin wouldn't be a bad idea.

If you have a soundblaster card it comes with a sound recorder. You can set it up to record "what you hear" assuming you stereo is hooked up to you computer. It'll record in wav. Thats the easiest way I figure. Thats also good for recording streaming audio that can't be downloaded.
