The Vault Toronto Rave Forum _ Public Forum _ Interview with 2 Bad Mice

Take us back in time…how did 2Bad Mice come together?

Myself (Sean O’Keeffe) and Simon Colebrooke kind of hooked up after meeting a few times in local clubs and record stores, we were both DJs, I was playing house and Balearic, Simon was playing hip hop.

When you started making beats together, what was the inspiration? Were you trying to imitate sounds you’d heard before or were you intent on making something different?

The inspiration came from being part of the whole rave “scene”, the music, the clubs, the raves, drug culture, pirate radio etc. We never tried to imitate sounds we’d heard we just tried to capture the vibe of the time

Your track ‘Bombscare’ was one of the defining tracks of rave music which is known the world over. How does it feel to have made one of the best known tracks in the genre? Did it suffer from overkill?

It’s pretty cool, we have great (if slightly patchy) memories of those days so it’s a nice feeling to think that we made some kind of impact. It can be quite surreal sometimes when you’re the other side of the world and ‘Bombscare’ comes on the radio. As for overkill.....i don’t think so, there were many memorable classics around at the time.

Are you still making beats today? If so, what styles and under what names?

Yep, Sean is still making D&B under the name Deep Blue.

Do you feel there are any artists today who are doing anything as original and fresh sounding as the pioneers of the rave scene were?

It’s funny that a lot of the people pushing the boundaries today actually originated from the rave scene.... a great example would be 4 Hero...Dego has his “2000 Black” label and Marc Mac is just about to release his Visioneers project. This stuff is right at the cutting edge.

You will be digging through the vaults for a live PA at the enormous Tranzmission at Alexandra Palace in London on April 15th, in the Raindance arch. Is this something you do regularly or will this be a special occasion
?

There’s still a huge demand for Old Skool DJ sets from 2 Bad Mice all over the world but this will be the first live PA we’ve done in nearly 10 years - really looking forward to it!

It’s an absolutely massive event with 5 arenas and dozens of DJs and live acts. Are you going to stay around after your set to soak up the atmosphere? Who do you want to see perform?

I guess it’s got to be Andy C in the D&B arena and Shades of Rhythm in the Old Skool room, that’ll bring back a few memories!

Massive-scale raves like this are few and fair between these days, especially compared to how things used to be. Why do you think this is?

It’s probably due to the constant splitting of one musical “genre” from another, back in the day you’d get Sasha, Carl Cox, Grooverider, Bukem etc all on the same stage, that doesn’t happen any more. Each scene has kind of gone back to the smaller more specialist events.

What plans have you got for the future? Have you still got ambitions with regards to dance music?

For sure, there are Deep Blue tunes coming out on Offshore and a 12” planned for DJ Flight’s “Play:Musik” label. Also got a top secret deep house project running with releases scheduled for the summer.

And finally, what was the last tune that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up?

Blvd East “Dub For Money” on Vega Records.
