Wasnt thrilled about the location but sometimes you have no other choice. I also played this night but i have no recording of it. Mickey and GQ produced some Wicked vibes straight through. A memorable night for sure, and historic.

I have a nice story from this night.

Mickey Finn was always my favourite. All the awol tapes, every set I heard, he was the one DJ i had always waited to see.

When he didnt make it thru at Champions of Champions, I was disapointed.
( I heard later he couldnt leave the UK cuz he was on probation )

When I saw this lineup, I was ecstatic! This was the one!

So as the night approached, me and my friends where all hyped. we got in early and I recall the warehouse being half full. the sound was BOOMIN, and I mean boomin.

so loud in fact, that shortly after we got inside, my friend passed out. Apparently the bass was too much. He left, with everyone else, leaving only me and another buddy inside.

an hour passed, and we where worried about his well being, so we went outside and told the security guard our story and that we want to check on him, and she agreed to sign our hand and let us back in when we returned.

We get to where we usually hung out and find everyone chillin and havin a good time. The guy that passed out was fine, laughed at us for leaving, and told us to get our ass back down there, so we did.

drive all the way back down to the Warehouse, get to the front, and after much arguing with teh same security guard (who seemed to have forgot our deal) she finally decides to let us in. as we are being searched, my friend is found with a bag of pot in his pocket and we both get denied entrance to the event.

As we walked away past the back door of the warehouse, we hear GQ do his now infamous introdction of the might Mickey Finn. We sat by that door, smoked a joint, and then left.

2 weeks later I spent 40$ on the tapes (horrible recording) at EasternBloc.

Posted by: sigma Jan 19 2004, 11:26 PM

dude that is brutal. I have to check the recording on these tapes again. i havent heard them in ages. I dont remember them being that bad. I'll encode them shortly.

Sorry you didnt get in bud. Was it Lucia or Suzie (blonde) that didnt let you in?

Posted by: Toxic Jan 19 2004, 11:29 PM

the tapes I got are all distorted.

I believe it was Lucia. i know she wasnt blonde, but she was a familiar face at all the events.

This was one of the best syrous lineups, in my opinion!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: SmoothOperator Jan 21 2004, 05:30 AM

This was definately one of my fave flyers. The choppers and Syrous emblem look sick!!!

Posted by: Variant Jan 21 2004, 07:06 AM

Toxic.. thats shitty dood.

Strange.. i don't even recall seeing the flyer for this. Although for some reason as 96 ended it really seemed like alot of people were leaving the scene and alot of shit was changing. Probably because that was the end of seeing good unique venues used. Warehouse was the standard and fuk was I sick of going there. Looking back though i'm sure this event would rinse compared to the shit being thrown at the opera house now.

I have a GREAT memory of this jam before it even happened

We were standing in Nathan Phil waiting for the shuttle and everyone was talking shit about how Mickey wasn't gonna show up. So i got up and walked into the shelter thing and called the syrous infoline. "The sound you hear behind me is that of a canadian freeway, My name is Mickey Finn, and I AM HERE"

To which i yelled at a crowd of ravers "Oh yeah, well mickey's on the fucking infoline so quit shit talking" I then watched people huddle around the payphone listening to the message.

Great event, warehouse sucks but the intro GQ gave mickey was one of the best of all time, "of the three i wanna here the most fucking noise in toronto..."

great story crash. thanks for sharing smile.gif

QUOTE (Crash @ Feb 10 2004, 07:47 AM)
Great event, warehouse sucks

no way. i loved that venue.

spacious, always proper sound / lighting.

as far back as 92, i always recall that place being proper. maybe a little overused.

Posted by: Crash Feb 11 2004, 02:22 AM

that's what it was though, that was around the start of the massive over-use of that venue for DnB. It wasn't the building that spoiled it, it was going there every weekend for months at a time.

I mean shit, we're still raving it up inside those walls

one last party i went too
proubly the tape that gives me the most chills
hearing that fucking intro
i was about 5 feet in the air after that first rewind

Posted by: Eddie Machete Feb 15 2004, 04:02 AM

tapes were garbage
bass heavy

thanks to Rick for pointing me to this site..

thanks to everyone for posting all this nostalgia up for me.

I've loved breakbeats/techno/jungle ever since the very beginning. I'd collect and scrounge tapes from everywhere that I could; an ancient Krome + Tyme tape i found sticks out in my mind at the moment.
anyway i was at X-Static all the time; I'd collect every flyer available there, week after week; I knew every DJ and MC who was performing, all the details; everything. I never went to any of those parties (too young, and strict parents), but I seriously felt the excitement. (sorry for this rant but im feeling really nostalgic). I'd stare at those flyers on my wall while lying in bed every night and every morning.

I can't believe all these flyers and mix tapes here. Every single one makes me so nostalgic; and I haven't even actually been to any of these early parties.

This event (Mickey Finn + GQ) was the first "rave" jungle party I've ever been to in my life. It stacked up to be everything I'd ever dreamed about a rave to be. Man, I can still feel that excitement of getting inside in the pit of my stomach.

Anyway;
Quick story from that night:
I remember when Mickey Finn's set just started. It was absolutely MAYHEM. The photograph I have in my mind's eye is one i'll never forget - all the lights were blarringly on, everyone's hands were up, and i could barely here GQ over everyone's yells and cheers.

Anyway, the quick story is:
I had left my jacket in the corner of the warehouse under some grill metal stares. When it came time to leave, I picked up my jacket and found it to be covered in a considerable amount of PUKE.

Normally, this would have totally upset me, or anyone for that matter, specially considering it was my first rave that i had spent yeeears hyping up in my head..but.. I didn't care at ALL. That was part of the excitement for me - the grunginess and dirtiness of it all..

anyway.

thanks for allt he work everyone has done here to put up these flyers and tapes. brought back those butterflies in my stomach.

I remeber that party well. For some reason though I remeber how loud everyone screamed for Mickey Finn at the intro (Crazy!) but even after the first tune played it was still really loud andno one around me was still screaming. I wonder if the record had a crowd recorded on it. I know everyone really screamed for Mickey but it just seemed to go on for too long... wink.gif

One of my 1st raves....brocked out wit alot of people this nite.....i remember when mickey dropped warhead....my chest was pounding cuz of the mushrooms i ate... biggrin.gif

boh!!!! chris thank you for finally posting this mix, this wuz my very first party ever and probably one of the best no doubt. i remember being in the lineup of this event, and the huge metal door wuz just rattling so bad, it gave me tingles all over my body. when i got inside it wuz so loud that i just instantly wanted to dance real hard and i wuz totally sober at the time too. it wuz defenitely the first time i ever was subjected to so much bass. i just cant believe i lasted as long as i did because i never wuz really used to staying up all night, because i wuz only 15 at the time and i wuznt introduced to chemicals or anything until the next year, i wuz purely into pot and beer. anyway thanx again chris this is a mix that i will cherish for years to come, also big up on the high quality flyer posted here, ill be snatching that as well, peace.

another great Syrous party ! had an amazing time.

i remember the venue was soooooo rammed i was @ the back of the government & couldnt move lol it was shoulder 2 shoulder in many parts.

pure vibes

Posted by: charade Jul 25 2005, 04:48 AM

I think this was the tape the blew the speakers in my parents minivan. I find that on a lot of Toronto rave tapes you can't really hear the crowd but on this one you can tell the vibes were heavy. The first fifteen minutes are sublime. So sad I missed this one. You must have had the dat running for someone else's set. Sniper? Mystical?

Posted by: rickiedee Dec 31 2014, 02:42 AM

Anyway we could get a tracklisting up for this set? that would be preeeeemo
